Clara plays songs on acoustic guitar

As part of a new series, we’ve created videos of Clara playing three songs from the indie album, God Has a Cadillac Too. The album was released in 2001 and received some great reviews including this one from Michel Cicero…

“makes me think of flying dreams, air conditioning and convertible Porsches. That is to say it transports me someplace cool. Day dreamy and breezy without being vacuous, it leaves space to reflect and breathe, giving the music at times a meditative groove. Torchy, lush vocals and lingering melodies sparkle like the California coast on a perfect day; a landscape the musicians are obviously familiar with. Hailing from Maheeland, a mystical portal to other dimensions”

Here’s the first release of this new acoustic series… more to come!

The simplest words are not always the easiest

Craig standing in front of a show berm

Craig is known for coming up with interesting guitar tones, chord changes and rhythms. It’s one of the talents that make Maheekats, Maheekats.

Baba Lives features a simple guitar lick but a saturated tone. There’s one simple but prominent chord change too. The vocal effects are richly layered with delay and distortion but the lyric is a simple message.

The message is brought to you by Sathya Sai Baba, an Indian guru. The point of this song is to highlight the simplicity of truthful words and great quotes, yet how hard these life principles can be to follow.

Lyrics…

You can’t see me
I am the light you see by

You can’t hear me
I am the sound you hear by

You can’t know me
I am the truth you live by

You can’t hear me
I am the sound you hear by
Ramala yama ya yama ya hey

You can’t see me
I am the light you see by
Ramala yama ya yama ya hey

You can’t know me
I am the truth you live by
Ramala yama ya yama ya hey

You can hear Sathya Sai Baba singing at the end of the song.

“Maheekats is a dream rock band out of California comprised of Clara Hembree and Craig Camp. They blur the lines between rock, folk, ethereal and psychedelic creating a unique groove. They cite diverse influences such as Sun Ra, XTC, Yes, The Specials, Phoebe Snow, and Killing Joke. While the influences are so seemingly random, it makes perfect sense with their overall vibe. Clara’s sweet vocals range from delicate, swooping falsettos to bluesy growls. Paired over luscious melodies of psychedelic and post-punk influenced guitar, bass and drums, Maheekats sound is distinctly modern and yet feels so wonderfully familiar.”

Getting all abstract to capture a feeling

Snow and trees with Clara walking in the distance

This song is about a feeling I had when an employer of mine moved away. After work, we used to sit and have tea and biscuits on her back patio which overlooked her lovely flower garden. At times I felt frustrated with the work, so I would hurry up and finish early so I could sit and chat with her. I learned so much. In the end, life moved on to find another bread & butter job and I felt broken by process.

I didn’t want the last line to have a true rhyme because I wanted to give the feeling of floating and not wanting to fall.

Lyrics…

When it breaks, it breaks me down
Down Oh!

Cold water under the bridge
Icicles upon the hedge

If you go far away
Away

Swirling wind under your throne
So much ringing drone

When it breaks, it breaks me down

In the middle of the end
Floating on a razor’s edge

When it breaks, it breaks me down

When a sensitive person goes to battle

girl and dog sitting on a boulder overlooking a burning city

For the lyrics of this song, I wanted to capture what it feels like to look around and watch life decay and come back to life again. As much as I think struggling will change things, the reality is that pain waxes and wanes. Sometimes it’s fast and terrifying, sometimes it’s full of anxiety and at other times it can be fun and exciting. How can pain be fun and exciting? Like exercise… it can be painful, but in the long run it’s so good for you.

With all of the above in mind, here comes a state of overwhelm. Never knowing what’s going on or what’s going to happen next. Yet from that place I look towards something I feel is greater than myself. Call it Lord or Love. Either way, it’s stable, comforting and all-knowing. I want to be close to that every moment of each day and night. It helps me deal with the rollercoaster called life.

Lyrics…

I hush your name
I hush your name
Why won’t you tell me
What’s goin’ down

Leavin’ all the world to decay
Leavin’ all
Leavin’ all the world to decay
Leavin’ all

What’s with the pain
Rollercoaster pain
Come close to me
And let me see

Leavin’ all the world to decay
Leavin’ all
Leavin’ all the world to decay
Leavin’ all

Heart of Love
Deep and full
Paints a color in the sand

I hush your name
Rollercoaster pain
Come close to me
And let me see

Leavin’ all the world to decay
Leavin’ all
Leavin’ all the world to decay
Leavin’ all

Oh Lord won’t you take me down
I know what you see in me
Oh Love won’t you take me down
I know what you see in me

We’re In the Snow Without Horizons Official Video

Maheekats Without Horizons Indie Pop Music

What a wonderful winter it was. I had never lived in the snow before now. What an adventure to be in the mountains. Honestly, what an adventure.

Written, produced, and mixed by Maheekats, mix advice by Larry Crane of Jackpot! Recording Studio.

“The Pretenders influenced ‘Without Horizons’ acts as the EP’s biggest step into straight-forward alternative rock, not that’s a bad thing. The riffs featured on the song once again highlight the wide and talented vocals of Maheekats and the quality of the production (and mixing) are of a fantastic quality. The greatest element of ‘Without Horizons’ is that it features some of the EP’s most well-written lyrics. These lyrics read as poetry and arise as the songs ultimate feature after each listen. Musically it sounds like a seventies inspired heavy rock song but practices a subtle hint of nineties era alternative/garage musical expansion which propels it to be greater after reading (or in this case listening) into it.” READ MORE

Lyrics:

Without horizons there’s a girl beside the road
And like a diamond she is rough around the soul
Go, yeah, go
Time is standing so still around you now
Time is bending a curve around you now
Facing a mirror there’s a man who goes to hell
And like an angel he is fighting with himself
Go, yeah, go
Time is standing so still around you now
Time is bending a curve around you now
They say I’ll get there when I wake up
But when I wake up I’ll be dreaming
And in my dream I’ll watch the time
Time is standing so still
Time is standing so still around you now
Time is bending a curve around you now

Two Versions of Devotee Bees Single

Maheekats Devotee Bees Album Cover

We Maheekats have played our song Devotee Bees live many times in pubs and clubs, but we hadn’t recorded it yet. We couldn’t decide whether we wanted real drums or a drum machine sound, so we settled on recording both.

This song is about the story of Sri Yukteswar and how “the devotee bees sought the divine nectar of the liberated master.” When you’ve had it with the world and nature is the all-accepting force. Remember we are not alone. Nobody is alone. Also, remember, follow yourself. These are things I’m constantly having to remind myself.

Includes unlimited streaming via the free Bandcamp app, plus high-quality download in MP3, FLAC and more.

The first version we completed was with the Alesis SR-16, a great drum machine from the 90’s.

For the next version, we commissioned our friend Mario Calire. We sent him the raw files and he recorded the drums in his own studio. We were happy with the results and mixed the tracks right away.

We’re happy with both, but which version do you prefer?

New Maheekat Album Sidetracked

Maheekats Sidetracked Album Cover

After a long hiatus, and many trials and tribulations, Maheekats release their second full length album, Sidetracked – Arbitrary Sonic Inklings. It’s a collection of tracks that breach the boundaries of genre. There’s a little twist of electronica, a bit of experimental sounds, and a good seasoning of indie rock.

The album is only available as a download. Downloads can be found at
