Facing fear and playing the songs acoustically

We set up a couple of cameras and a couple of mics. I warmed up, dressed up, then sat down in front of the lights and played a few songs from Maheekats first release, God Has a Cadillac Too.

It was challenging because there really wasn’t much else besides me and a song. These aren’t cover songs either. They are the creations that Craig and I have released years ago.

The background videos and imagery were added for extra interest. The first one, for the song Reading Into Stuff, features icebergs, sending a message that I’m breaking the ice in this series.

For the second song, I chose to do Stone. It’s one of my favorite songs from the album because it features Craig singing on it as well as his own lyrics.

Background imagery includes footage of Glacier National Park, a mountainous and rocky region.

Finally, the third song chosen for this series was Mr. Radio Man. It’s a song that was written in my poetry reading days. You can really hear how well the Baby Taylor plays in this song. It is my favorite acoustic guitar to date.

The background shows footage of the beatnik era. I think I’m a beatnik!

The secret behind the frogs in the bridge of Loaded – and why is the video 3D?

a frog peeking out of a green pond

This is a song I wrote while driving along the Pacific Coast Highway in northern California in the early 1990’s. Craig helped to refine it. Originally, the song was going to be recorded acoustically, with only my vocals and an acoustic guitar. We still might release it that way in the future, but for this version we were inspired to add in drums, bass, keyboards AND some frogs. Frogs? Yes, frogs. 🙂

Earlier this summer there were a few ponds near our neighborhood that were teeming with wildlife and while we were recording the song, we were listening back and thinking about the bridge section. Craig remembered the sound of the frogs in one of the ponds and suggested we try it out to see if it worked. It was a wonderful opportunity to do some field recordings. So we hopped on our bikes (pun intended) and rode to a pond and recorded the frogs singing away at dusk.

We brought the recordings home and edited the frog soundscape into the bridge section. It was such a nice surprise sound and we both really liked the feeling of nature in a song like Loaded.

We also created a video for the song. After we released it, a friend of ours pointed out there are some really cool 3D sections.

My next step was to get some 3D glasses and check it out for myself.

Maheekats Indie Pop 3D Glasses for Loaded

It’s true! There are sections of the video that are in 3D! We had no idea when we created the video.

If you want a pair of glasses, let me know… I’ll send you a pair. I have 9 extra to send to people.

NASA Inspired Video for Lady In Space

Maheekats Indie Music Video Lady In Space NASA

Inspired by women astronauts and astrophysicists, Maheekats created a video for their song, Lady In Space. The music video features a spaceship created by Craig Camp and footage from NASA and Videvo.

Those silver boots!

Lyrics:

Boarding the ship as the whistle blows
She’s right at home with the cockpit controls
And if her glasses slip down her nose
There’s no distraction ’cause there she goes

Lady in space
Lady in space
Lady in space

And what good luck that the sky’s so clear
‘Cause that means flyin’ without any fear
And as she pushes the atmosphere
Here come the stars that she holds so dear

Lady in space
Lady in space
Lady in space

Oh yeah
Oh yeah

From all around
Perspective is found
She might stay
Or fly fly fly away

Lady in space
Lady in space
Lady in space

I don’t know how she flies so high
I don’t know how she flies so high
I don’t know how she flies so high

We’re In the Snow Without Horizons Official Video

Maheekats Without Horizons Indie Pop Music

What a wonderful winter it was. I had never lived in the snow before now. What an adventure to be in the mountains. Honestly, what an adventure.

Written, produced, and mixed by Maheekats, mix advice by Larry Crane of Jackpot! Recording Studio.

“The Pretenders influenced ‘Without Horizons’ acts as the EP’s biggest step into straight-forward alternative rock, not that’s a bad thing. The riffs featured on the song once again highlight the wide and talented vocals of Maheekats and the quality of the production (and mixing) are of a fantastic quality. The greatest element of ‘Without Horizons’ is that it features some of the EP’s most well-written lyrics. These lyrics read as poetry and arise as the songs ultimate feature after each listen. Musically it sounds like a seventies inspired heavy rock song but practices a subtle hint of nineties era alternative/garage musical expansion which propels it to be greater after reading (or in this case listening) into it.” READ MORE

Lyrics:

Without horizons there’s a girl beside the road
And like a diamond she is rough around the soul
Go, yeah, go
Time is standing so still around you now
Time is bending a curve around you now
Facing a mirror there’s a man who goes to hell
And like an angel he is fighting with himself
Go, yeah, go
Time is standing so still around you now
Time is bending a curve around you now
They say I’ll get there when I wake up
But when I wake up I’ll be dreaming
And in my dream I’ll watch the time
Time is standing so still
Time is standing so still around you now
Time is bending a curve around you now

When a Good Friend Makes a Video for You

Girl lighting a match and smiling

We’re very happy to announce that our good friends Ryan and Justin were inspired to create a video for Maheekats’ song The Emptiness.

Here’s what Ryan says…

this video is my love letter to the maheekats, a band that is new to town, having recently migrated from ojai. bassist casey and guitarist/vocalist clara moved here as a duo and then added drummer grace and an additional guitar player by the name of marvin domingeuz, who happens to also play in the fantastic sb band moonblast. since then they have been playing heartbreakingly beautiful sets all over town. maheekats make lovely shoegazer/dreampop songs, and they remind me of bands like the cocteau twins and the pale saints. they recently recorded this song with marvin (who is also an awesome engineer/producer) and when i asked them if i could make a home-made video for them, this was the track they chose. i listened to it, and loved it and immediately knew how i wanted to approach it. hope you all enjoy the song and the accompanying film!

The Emptiness is a song about the faerie people (Sidhe) and the tunnel our spirits use to travel from this world to the next.

Lyrics:
Sidhe and reality
Live side by side in a rooty tree
Where God and the dirt of the earth meet
So the story goes
All I want to do is feel the emptiness happen
All I want to do is see the tunnel open up inside
All I want to do is feel the emptiness happen like I’m already there

Sidhe and reality
Hold one another so pruriently
Then God quietly understands
So the story goes
All I want to do is feel the emptiness happen
All I want to do is see the tunnel open up inside
All I want to do is feel the emptiness happen like I’m already there
Like I’m already there

I know I’ve seen you before Love!
I know I’ve seen you before Love!

Sidhe and reality
Live on and on today
Ruthlessly lighting the eyes in the minds of all
So the story goes
All I want to do is feel the emptiness happen
All I want to do is see the tunnel open up inside
All I want to do is feel the emptiness happen like I’m already there
